McIntyre Dick in conjunction with Export Southland is proud to sponsor the award of the biennial Graham Dick Memorial Trophy to Keith Neylon MNZM, a Southlander with more than 50 years of trailblasing contributions to New Zealand's primary industries.

From humble beginnings in Nightcaps, where he left school at 15, Keith’s journey has taken him across a diverse range of industries, leaving an indelible mark on Southland and beyond.

Keith Neylon’s career is a testament to innovation and vision. Described as a man with "a touch of madness," his boldness has driven success in industries as varied as aviation, shellfish, salmon, large-scale farming, and most recently, sheep milk production through Blue River Dairy. Keith’s autobiography, A Touch of Madness, chronicles his fearless approach to advancing New Zealand’s resources and his relentless determination to overcome challenges — both within industries and in the broader New Zealand psyche.

“Keith’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary,” says Stewart Perkins, Principal of McIntyre Dick who presented the award on our behalf.

His story is one of perseverance, vision and a willingness to push boundaries to create lasting impact.”

Stewart Perkins, speaking on behalf of McIntyre Dick.

Keith is no stranger to obstacles. Throughout his career, he has spoken out against New Zealand’s tendency toward short-term thinking, highlighting the need for long-term strategy and collaboration. His experiences with international markets, especially in China, have demonstrated his appreciation for strategic development and the patience required to realise true success. Keith has often noted the stark difference in approach: while New Zealanders seek instant gratification, others are willing to invest for rewards decades down the line.

Despite these frustrations, Keith has remained dedicated to Southland and to building industries from the ground up. His work in the sheep milk industry, where he pioneered sheep milking with Blue River Dairy, was a groundbreaking achievement that opened new export markets and set the stage for future success.

Even when faced with competition from larger players like Landcorp, Keith’s tenacity and foresight enabled him to push forward and create something extraordinary.

Keith’s story also reflects his deep connection to Southland and his passion for advancing local industries on a global stage. His time in aviation during the wild days of deer recovery, his ventures in shellfish and salmon and his agricultural work demonstrate his unwavering commitment to New Zealand’s primary industries.

Keith’s legacy serves as an inspiration not only for the Southland community but for all New Zealanders striving to make their mark on the world. Please join us in celebrating Keith Neylon and his incredible contributions to Southland and New Zealand’s primary industries.
