At the end of last month, McIntyre Dick was lucky enough to attend and have a stall at the recent Career Fest held at ILT Stadium Southland. Career Fest is a two-day event held by Southern Directionz that is attended by high schools and members of the public Southland-wide.

It is a chance for people to gain a closer insight into potential future job prospects as well as provide employers and organisations with the opportunity to start conversations with the next generation.

Over the two days, a number of the McIntyre Dick team manned the stall from Directors through to Graduates. This allowed us to have a number of conversations with many different people wanting to learn more about accounting as a career path and what different pathways can look like within our industry. 

In 2023 the Southern Institute of Technology will be offering a new unified Bachelor of Accounting degree for those looking to get qualified. Here at McIntyre Dick, we have an ‘earn while you learn’ training programme, where students have the flexibility to work towards achieving their degree part-time while also gaining valuable industry experience in-house. There is also the option of studying via correspondence or working with us during university and polytechnic holidays. 

I was lucky enough to spend one of my school work days at McIntyre Dick, where I set my sights on hopefully working here one day. I then worked my way through a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in accounting at SIT. This was a great learning opportunity for me as the classes were smaller and had a wide range of people of varying ages and experience. The earn while you learn programme we are offering would be an awesome opportunity to put that theoretical knowledge you gain while working towards your degree into a practical setting and will help you really understand what you are learning. - Eden van Leeuwen, Client Advisor

Attending the 2022 Career Fest was a great way to meet the next generation of accountants. Our team had some insightful and positive conversations that we have now seen start to take action with our first group of high school students coming into the office in a couple of weeks. Here they will learn more about what a day in the life looks like, and also have a range of departments they will have access to learn more about.
