I recently embarked on a transformative journey, one that took me thousands of miles away from home to the bustling streets of Tokyo, Japan. Through the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia, I had the incredible opportunity to undertake a 6-week accounting internship, an experience that has not only enriched my career but also left an indelible mark on my personal growth. And let me tell you, if I, a 39-year-old Maori female recent graduate and mother of six, can do it, so can you—perhaps even better.

This blog is a glimpse into my journey, my learnings, and the invaluable support I received from McIntyre Dick (MDP) as I ventured into the world of international accounting.

Harnessing the Opportunity

I applied for the scholarship through the Southern Institute of Technology – Invercargill / Te Pukenga. Little did I know that this journey would unfold into an experience of a lifetime. Leaving behind my whanau and MDP was a challenge, I wouldn’t have been able to attend if it wasn’t for their support.

At the heart of this journey were the remarkable individuals at Wintec and Te Pukenga. Susan Ye and Sarah Richards tirelessly orchestrated every detail, ensuring that we were equipped with everything we needed—from interview training to international travel arrangements. Their dedication, spanning over 12 months, exemplified true commitment, especially amidst the uncertainties posed by the ever-changing landscape of Covid restrictions.

Cultural Immersion

Stepping into Tokyo, I was embraced by a culture steeped in respect, responsibility, and unwavering work ethic. From the meticulous customs of greeting and bidding farewell to the profound sense of community responsibility, every aspect of Japanese culture left a lasting impression on me. They work hard and play hard, but they also make sure that everyone feels as included as possible. Work is work and social events are just that, to get to know you more on a personal level.

Observing their deeply ingrained culture of respect from the outset, it became evident that pride permeated every aspect of their actions. Everyone is responsible for everything from cleaning road cones outside of their organisation to working in a corporate office and every personnel helps to clean the office. Tokyo became not just a workplace but a classroom, where I learned the culture is founded on the true essence of tikanga.

Excursions Beyond Imagination

Beyond the confines of the office, Tokyo unveiled itself as a treasure trove of adventures. From the majestic Mt. Fuji to the enchanting world of Disney Seas, each excursion was a testament to the rich tapestry of experiences awaiting beyond the confines of our comfort zones. These outings not only enriched our understanding of Japan but also provided the opportunity to form lasting friendships.

Building Bridges: Social Connections

In the company of fellow interns, strangers became confidants, and bonds formed transcending geographical boundaries. There were so many different personalities amongst our group of 10 and we each had completely different perspectives yet connected so well as a group. We cared for each other, walked with each other, laughed, cried, and helped each other ease the loneliness of home. We helped each other focus on our goal and our why. Through shared experiences and shared dreams, we found solace and strength in each other's company, transforming acquaintances into cherished whanau.

Guidance and Care: The Intern Group

The Intern Group, represented by Erica Izawa and Alisha, became our pillars of support in Tokyo. From ensuring our well-being to navigating the intricacies of local life, their unwavering commitment ensured that our focus remained on our professional growth. Their efforts extended beyond professional obligations, exemplifying the true essence of hospitality and care.

Knowledge Amplified

Amidst the cultural immersion and social connections, the accounting internship presented itself as the crucible of learning. In a dynamic, multicultural environment, I was challenged to navigate language barriers and cultural nuances, pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone. The freedom to innovate and execute tasks fostered a sense of empowerment, culminating in a newfound confidence in my abilities.

The one thing that will remain with me forever is the global coverage that they analyse. Granted, I am just a small fish and thinking about what I can contribute to my country and this scholarship helped to broaden my perspective. Because they are focused on what is happening in the entire world, I became aware of how everything relates to the turmoil that each country faces e.g. the Russia-Ukraine war and the trickle-down effect is creating to the markets and trading.

The language barrier is also a real thing, something that I should’ve taken more seriously, thankfully there were enough people that spoke English. I feel very honored and grateful to have the experience of being involved in their workplace, it showed me what I am truly capable of and that confidence will guide me into the next chapter of my accounting career.

Empowerment and Purpose

As I reflect on my journey, one truth stands paramount—opportunities abound for those willing to seize them. My purpose, to empower others, has been reaffirmed through this transformative experience. And as I extend a hand of encouragement to those embarking on their own journeys, I urge you to embrace the uniqueness of your path, for therein lies the true essence of growth and fulfilment.

As I pen down these reflections, I am reminded of the words of encouragement that propelled me forward: "For every good situation, you are gliding, for every bad situation, you are strengthening to help you glide further." May these words resonate with you as you chart your course across the ocean of possibilities.

Looking ahead, I am excited to witness the adventures that await you, each one unique and brimming with promise. Should you seek further information about the scholarship or wish to explore the support available, please do not hesitate to reach out. Remember, the more we learn and bring back home, the more our country thrives!
